Profil Edition Gunter Hanssler presents a pair of true Bruckner rarities from Dresden. From 1936, the first recording of Bruckner’s Symphony No. 4 “Romantic” (in the ‘Original Version of the Complete Edition’ by Robert Haas, 1935) and, from 1937, the first recording of Bruckner’s Symphony No. 5 “Chorale Symphony” (in the ‘Original Version of the Complete Edition’ by Robert Haas, 1936).Austrian musicologist Robert Haas published editions of most of Bruckner’s Symphonies between 1935 and 1944, based on original manuscripts. His work is controversial, due in no small part to his membership in the Nazi party and the influence that Nazi ideology played on his overall portrayal of Bruckner the man. After the War Leopold Nowak produced new editions of all of Bruckner’s Symphonies that quickly replaced Hass’s as the preferred scores.
