For the past 25 years, I have had the privilege and pleasure to explore and share my passion for choral music with that remarkable group of singers known as the Tafelmusik Chamber Choir. We opened our silver anniversary season with a gala concert of music that defines this choir and its characteristic sound and spirit. We are very grateful to CBC Records for giving us the opportunity to record this CD, a document of this special celebration. The Tafelmusik Chamber Choir's strong national reputation is largely due to the support of the CBC, both through regular broadcasts on CBC Radio, and through numerous recordings on the CBC Records label. I extend my sincere thanks to the CBC for a quarter-century of support, and look forward to many more years of collaboration. --Ivars Taurins
This recording with the TAFELMUSIK CHAMBER CHOIR under the expert direction of IVARS TAURINS is the fifth CD recorded for the CBC Records label and continues a wonderful partnership in celebration of the Choir's 25th Anniversary. The choir's specialization in baroque performance practice and vocal technique is once again beautifully demonstrated in repertoire honouring the theme, GLORIA IN EXCELSIS DEO, both familiar with Bach and Vivaldi, and also a splendid but rarely performed version from the pen of the French composer, Jean-Joseph Cassanea de Mondonville. From its gracious airs to its lively choruses, Mondonville's work is a splendid example of the 18th-century grand motet. The choir is accompanied by the TAFELMUSIK BAROQUE ORCHESTRA.
The solo work in this recording is equally stunning. Soprano, ANN MONOYIOS, herself critically acclaimed for her performance from the baroque period, is joined by the internationally renowned counter-tenor MATTHEW WHITE and tenor COLIN AINSWORTH.
