Cinema Noir and Cool Bebop! (Feb 18, 2010)
Reviewer:Tym If you know composer Carl Davis from collaborating on Paul McCartney's "Liverpool Oratorio", here's a musical travelogue of his hip range.
This dark comedy score is a lively suite of cinema noir and cool bebop, like some cult 60's soundtrack by Umiliani or Trovajoli. Davis has full command of its fluid styles and seems to relish every minute of the fun.

This would play great behind your next party, with guests smiling at the winking cues. "Blind Vertigo" and "The Coin" recall the aching and anxious strings of Herrmann's "Vertigo" with razor hints of "Psycho". The elegant waltzs of "Meet the Family" and "Rebecca's Waltz" flow like Strauss. "Casual Bossa" channels the balmy cool of Stan Getz and Antonio Carlos Jobim, while "Restaurant" slinks in with a surprisingly funky swagger. "Fireman" dapples like a piano bop stream. "Can't Stop" and "Electioneering" double-step with sly Coltrane honks. "Thriller" and "First Night" smolder uncannily with John Barry's lush darkness. "Deli" is Lionel Hampton vibing happily. Wry wit underscores the diva of "The La La La Song" with 20's genteel cabaret. "Greta" razzes like a Louis Armstrong striptease. "Nutcake" ignites a dance party with supple Woody Herman clarinet. Naturally "Detectives" fingersnaps in on Henry Mancini lounge cool. The longer piece "Waking" has the eccentric textural dynamics of Morricone, seamlessly summing up the character themes and the mix of styles. And "Last Victim and End Roller" is a bittersweet theme reminiscent of the neurotic ballad "It Must Be Him" (Shirley Bassey; Vikki Carr), closing the medley on an almost Chaplin note. A fun listen with a lot of smarts behind it!(read more)
