TARREGA, FRANCISCO (1852 - 1909)
Franciso Tárrega was the Spanish guitarist and composer who is generally recognised as the person responsible for the rebirth of the instrument for the 20th century. A quite outstanding virtuoso performer, he toured the world, encouraging composers to write for the instrument, while creating the environment for the younger generation to make the instrument their major concern. As a composer he was conservative, restricting his style to the general trend in the second half of the 19th century. His output was modest, with just 78 original scores and 120 transcriptions - mostly for his own use - of the great classical compositions.
