If you are not familiar with the glorious music of Ivor Novello then this will be a great introduction to it. Novello wrote between World War I and World War II, big sweeping operettas, starring in them as well, although he did not sing. Marilyn Hill Smith is the latest in a long line of English Sopranos who sing the repetoire inbetween opera and musical comedy. She took over the role of... Novello wrote between World War I and World War II, big sweeping operettas, starring in them as well, although he did not sing. Marilyn Hill Smith is the latest in a long line of English Sopranos who sing the repetoire inbetween opera and musical comedy. She took over the role of standard bearer for this this voice type from the lovely June Bronhill who sang between the 1950's and early 1970's. Miss Bronhill had a glorious voice with a gorgeous top, Ms. Hill Smith betters her in every way, a voice of crystaline clarity and a top of infinate beauty. Ivor Novello was famous for his long lined sweeping melodies, amply represented in this collection. Among the better know songs are My Dearest Dear, Some Day My Heart will Awake and We'll Gather Lilacs. This is a wonderful album, an introduction to a lovely operetta composer. (read more)
