The Welsh organist, choral director and composer Iain Quinn is based in the USA as Director of Cathedral Music
and Organist at the Cathedral Church of St John in Albuquerque, New Mexico. As an organist he has performed
throughout the world, for example at Alice Tully Hall, New York, Washington National Cathedral, Grace
Cathedral, San Francisco, Westminster Abbey and St. Paul's Cathedral, London, Kaiser-Wilhelm-Gedachtnis-
Kirche, Berlin and Melba Hall, Melbourne.
This new recording is devoted to Czech organ music and includes pieces by Novak, Janacek, Dvorak and Smetana
and the solitary organ work of Martinu. The pieces are linked by the historical legacy of a composition teacherpupil
relationship. The largest work is the St Wenceslas Triptych by Vitezslav Novak, which is of equal scale to
the great romantic organ works of Liszt and Reubke.
Iain Quinn explains that the Norwich Cathedral organ 'offers a symphonic dimension in its specification that is
especially well suited to this repertoire'. When this sound is coupled with the splendid acoustic of the Cathedral the
results are glorious.
Previously on Chandos Iain Quinn has performed Russian organ music on a disc titled Tsar of Instruments. Of this
recording Gramophone wrote, 'Iain Quinn is outstanding and his skilful, polished use of the organ makes this one
of the best CDs you'll hear of that instrument'.
Quinn's recording of American Organ music on the organ of Coventry Cathedral will be released on Chandos later
in 2008.
