Although my musical taste tends toward the avant-garde and experimental, I must confess that Respighi has long been one of my favorite composers. An unashamed romantic who looked to ancient musical forms (particularly Medieval and Renaissance) for inspiration, he created music of rich harmonic grandeur and deep emotional resonance. Respighi is one of those composers to whom I’d never given much attention, but one day I heard part of the Pines of Rome on the radio and discovered I’d been missing something. He composed in the middle ground between romanticism and impressionism, a master of orchestration and atmosphere.

Respighi is of course best known for his Roman trilogy, and there's not anything on this album that is likely to join those works in terms of fame. Having said that, I really like Rossiniana, based on some of Rossini's piano works.
