Born in Munich in 1864, Richard Strauss gained international acceptance as a composer before his mid-20's. Till Eulenspiegel, Don Juan and Also Sprach Zarathustra, brought him popular acclaim, while his operas Salome, Der Rosenkavalier and Elektra form part of the standard repertoire. For the incidental music to MoliÀre's play, Le Bourgeois gentilhomme, Strauss recreated the French era of Lully, in a score full of good humour. In the opera, Intermezzo, Strauss broke new ground, being a conversation opera recounting a domestic quarrel between the composer and his wife. He later formed an orchestral suite of the linking interludes.
