The German composer Robert Volkmann was born in Dresden and studied in Freiberg,
later taking composition lessons in Leipzig, where he met Schumann. In 1841 he
moved to Budapest, where, until his death in 1883, he played a part in the encouragement
of Hungarian nationalism in music, promoted by Liszt and others. He wrote music
in various genres, with a Piano Trio dedicated to and admired by Liszt, and an
Overture to Shakespeare's Richard III.
