La Rue, Pierre de
LA RUE, PIERRE DE (1452 - 1518)
Pierre de La Rue was Flemish and born around 1460, though the actual year is uncertain. We are equally unaware of his period of education, but he was obviously a well-travelled young man, his name turning up in France, Italy and Spain. He was obviously a singer of quality, as his name appears as a member of Emperor Maximilian's Royal Chapel. He continued as a singer in the court of Philip the Fair, and it was 1508 before he returned to his native land, where he enjoyed a long relationship with the Netherlands courts. He was also a composer of repute, his works ranking alongside Josquin, Obrecht and Agricola. He wrote extensively in the field of sacred and secular music, though it was his series of Masses and Motets on which his reputation largely resides. He retired from all appointments in 1516 and died two years later.
