Peter Maxwell Davies
The son of a French banker father and an Argentinian mother, Herman Bemberg studied
in Paris with César Franck and Jules Massenet. His first opera was staged
at the Opéra-Comique in 1888, and his highly successful grand opera Elaine,
based on a poem by Tennyson, was staged at Covent Garden in 1892. Other operas
include Cleopatra and Salomé, both in 1894, and he also wrote
a number of songs and piano pieces.
