Born in Moscow in1872, Alexander Scriabin was diminutive in size, his hands far too small for his chosen career as a pianist. Yet he overcame such problems and was a highly regarded concert artist. His early works, such as the Piano Concerto, took their inspiration from Chopin, and though he wrote three symphonies, most of his output was for piano. He never deserted melody as the basis of his music, yet in later life he changed to a more abstract style, experimenting with new forms of writing, in Prometheus attempting to link music with a lighting display.
