The music of the most famous composer of French operetta, Jacques Offenbach rivalled Johann Strauss in popularity, with such works as Orpheus in the Underworld, La Belle Hélène and Le Grande-Duchesse de Gérolstein. Drawing on melodies from these operettas, the famous conductor and composer, Manuel Rosenthal, created one of the most famous ballets, Gaîté Parisienne. Frothy and tuneful, this vivacious score has a companion piece, Offenbachiana, in which Rosenthal again plunders some of the composer's most memorable melodies.
