Three Greek Ballets: Apollo Agon Orpheus
Apollo: Ballet in Two Scenes
In classical dancing I see the triumph of studied
conception over vagueness, of the rule over the
arbitrary, of order over the haphazard.... I see
in it the perfect expression of the Apollonian
principle. (Stravinsky)
If Apollo's mother was Leto, then certainly his
father was Fyodor. (Balanchine, in a birthday
telegram to Igor Fyodorovitch Stravinsky, 18th
June, 1945)

Definitive recordings by long time associate Robert Craft of three ballets representing the Master at three different periods, as he constantly redefined his art and vision. The result is a tour de force in modern orchestral composition, from the earlier, tragic Apollo, the lyrical and expressive Orpheus, with its use of Greek modes at beginning and end to haunting effect, and culminating with his final ballet, Agon, 1957, with different instrumentation for each of it's 16 dance movements! Playing and recording are consistently fine throughout. A disc no Stravinsky or ballet afficianado should be without!
